Imagine walking on ancient paths winding through lush forests and verdant hills, with breathtaking views spanning from the mountains to the Lombard plain. In the heart of the Lecco Brianza area, Mount San Genesio represents an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts who wish to combine nature, history, and gastronomic pleasures in a single unforgettable experience.
The Hermitage of San Genesio is located at the top of the hill of the same name at 832 meters above sea level, in a privileged position that makes it visible from every part of Brianza. The history of this place is ancient and fascinating: the first official document attesting to its existence dates back to 950 AD, when a notarial deed mentions the "cappella Sancti Genexii in Monte Suma."
This site has experienced several important historical phases. From the end of the 1500s to 1770, it was inhabited by Augustinian friars, until the Austrian governor and the Archbishop of Milan decreed its closure. After a period of abandonment, it returned to its religious function thanks to the Camaldolese Friars who, from 1863 to 1938, rebuilt the convent and the church, dedicating it to Saint Joseph.
Today the hermitage is private property and it is rarely possible to visit its interiors, but the panorama from its 832 meters of altitude is extraordinary: to the northeast opens the Adda valley with the Grigne in the background (a landscape dear to Leonardo da Vinci), while to the southwest the gaze embraces the arc of the Apennines, the Po Valley, and the circle of the Alps with the Milan skyscrapers standing out in the distance.
Starting from the Olgiate Molgora railway station (287m), this master route first crosses the Mondonico district and then climbs toward the ancient village of Campsirago (676m), a settlement now extensively renovated that enjoys a sunny position and a beautiful view of the plain below. From here, following trail markers No. 1, you continue until you reach the former Hermitage of San Genesio.
Starting from Ello, this path offers wonderful panoramic views. You pass by the locality "I Mort de la Rata" (where a chapel commemorates the calamities of the 1630 plague) and continue towards the ancient village of Figina, still intact today and partly inhabited. From here, the trail markers indicate the direction to Mount Crocione or Cascina Alpe, points from which you can easily reach trail No. 1 that leads to the Hermitage.
For those who prefer a more comfortable solution, it is possible to reach the Hermitage by car starting from the Cagliano district in the municipality of Colle Brianza. The road climbs up to the small church of Madonna del Sasso (where it is worth making a stop), then becomes unpaved until the top where there are some parking spaces, the hermitage, and the Ristoro Alpino.
On the way back, don't miss the opportunity to make a tasty stop at the Ristoro Alpino, managed by the Alpini group of Colle Brianza and open on Sundays. Although it is not possible to make reservations, this rustic refuge offers an authentic experience for those who wish to refuel with a hot meal after the hike. Alternatively, for those who bring their own packed lunch, wooden tables are available outside or large grassy areas where you can spread a cloth and enjoy a few hours of relaxation immersed in nature.
A short distance from the Hermitage of San Genesio, at 879 meters above sea level, is Mount Crocione, another unmissable panoramic point. The Crocione was erected in 1937, but the original cross, deteriorated over time, was replaced in the early 1990s. From this point, you can enjoy an extraordinary view of all of Brianza and the surrounding mountains.
The itineraries that lead to San Genesio offer the opportunity to cross ancient villages that tell the story of this territory. Campsirago, Ravellino, Figina are just some of the settlements that dot the paths, each with its own architectural and historical peculiarities that deserve a stop to be appreciated.
